Ruth Truths 20: Practicality has a place

Ruth Truths 20: Practical steps have a place "Wash yourself therefore, and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes, and go down to the threshing floor; but do not reveal yourself to the man until he has finished eating and drinking." Ruth 3:3 I love how the Bible just records everything, warts and all. And at the same time, has very practical advice.  Christians often try to spiritualise everything, as if that would make it kosher. Don't get me wrong, I am all for being led by the Spi...

Is the stock market "weird"?

Isn't the stock market "weird"?Each time someone sells a stock, someone is on the other side buying. But they both think they will be right! Otherwise they wouldn't have bought or sold respectively right?OK, that's half in jest. What I'm trying to say is, when you invest or sell, be humble and aware of the fact that you could be making a mistake. It's OK to be confident (in fact necessary) in your decision making process because otherwise you should not have done it. Do enough research to build c...

Ruth Truths 19: Are you teachable?

Ruth Truth 19: Are you teachable?"So Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz....and she lived with her mother-in-law" Ruth 2:23Naomi had just given Ruth some advice to stay in Boaz's field and Ruth heeded that advice. Theoretically Ruth was the "bread winner" of the family now. She was the one who went out to work and make money. Naomi was now dependant on Ruth for her livelihood so Ruth could be the one calling the shots. Ruth could have thought to herself she will just go and find ...

Small Steps to Big Changes

What an AMAZING SESSION THIS WAS!!! I really enjoyed chatting with Kenneth and learning business tips on growth and mindset. My big takeway: Make small changes, register small wins, and then keep winning! Be "solution focused" and LEVEL UP! I am confident there is something valuable you can take away in this interview. Some resources to help you:You can purchase Kenneth's physical or ebook: Small Steps To Big Changes from https://smallstepstobigchanges.com/ If you would like Kenneth Kwan to work...

Is it foolish to run a concentrated investment portfolio?

Is it foolish to put all your "investment" eggs in one basket? One key benefit I have found about a concentrated portfolio is the FOCUS and DISCIPLINE it brings. Do you know it is extremely "easy" to buy stocks? All you need to do is open a brokerage account, fund it, click some buttons and off you go! However, because it is sooo easy, many people don't take it seriously enough. They will spend days, weeks, even months researching the latest car they want to buy. But have no qualms listening to...

Ruth Truths 18: Are you tempted to take it easy?

"So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered...she carried it back to town..." Ruth 2:17 Don't stop.  By this time, Ruth was noticed by Boaz and he was showing her a lot of favour. He provided lunch and also instructed his workers to be kind and protect her.  It seems like she can now "take it easy" and coast along.  However, she didn't. Ruth continued working hard, all the way until evening and then carried whatever she had picked up ...

Ruth Truths 17: May you be richly rewarded!

"May you be richly rewarded by the Lord...under whose wings you have come to take refuge." Ruth 2:12I can talk about money, investing, real estate and stocks all day long. That's my passion and I suppose my gifting. The danger is this. It is easy to place our confidence and trust in what we have and our own abilities. In fact, the MORE we HAVE, the greater the danger that our wealth can HAVE US. Ruth was working in Boaz's field and in a way, Boaz is the one "being kind to her". But Boa...

"Is your money gathering digital dust?"

"Is your money gathering digital dust?" Kenneth Kwan Loved it! Was having a chat with Kenneth and the topic of investing our money came up. Its so true eh? In the current low interest rate environment, the interest you receive on your savings will almost be meaningless. Does that mean we don't save? No! Even if it is just a small amount, save! You can still invest regularly (make sure you know what you are doing and are aware fo the risks etc), or you could accumulate it over a few months and i...

What can you learn about investing from Game Stop ?

"...momentum works until it doesn’t. The people who make money in momentum are the people who can detect when momentum shifts. So if you want to be a trader, be a trader, but be aware of the fact that you’ve got to sense when the momentum is shifting. That’s a very different game. If you’re good at it you can make a lot of money but if you’re not I mean you’re going to get slaughtered!"Aswath DamodaranWell the Gamestop saga is all but Game Over by now. But I was actually a little conc...

Ruth Truths 16: You are noticed, Beloved!

"...that you notice me......Boaz replied, "I've been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law..." Ruth 2:10-11You ARE noticed. I know sometimes it may not feel like it, especially in the age of instagram where it is common to compare yourself to others and how many more followers or likes their posts are getting. I just want to encourage you to keep on keeping on. God notices. Jesus says if God feeds the birds of the air and clothese the flowers of the field, how m...

Investment Compounding: To the upside and to the downside!

Flogging the "compounding" horse. I've been ranting about this topic for a while and thought I would provide some numbers for why it makes sense. Assuming you can find a wonderful company that doubles in value every X number of years. If you can do that in 10 years, your rate of return is 7.2%. Too low in my opinion. Trying to double every year is too aggressive and would probably lead you to making very risky decisions. What I aim for is doubling every 3 years, or a compound annual return of 26...

Are there companies you should never sell?

Are there companies you should never sell? I am not sure if some of you caught one of the more important points from Howard Marks' latest letter that I shared last week. Interestinly, this is a point I have been saying in many different ways recently, maybe because I need to remind myself. The point is this: There are certain truly WONDERFUL businesses that investors should never sell. These companies are able to compound retained earnings at a high rate CONSISTENTLY and can SCALE with very lit...

Ruth Truths 15: Refresh

"8 So Boaz said to Ruth, ‘My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. 9 Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.’ Ruth 2:8-9 Verb #6: REFRESH (go and get a drink) Ok, last one from these 2 verses! What a joy milking and gleanin...

Howard Marks on Value vs Growth Investing

If there's something you wanna read about investing this weekend, read THIS.  I have been reading Howard Marks's letters for a long time and always find something useful to learn. This one is no different, but he seems to have packed a huge amount into this particular letter, talking about Growth vs Value Investing. https://loom.ly/VLBt4CM Some of the points that really jump out at me are: - How Marks is able to keep an open mind even though he is primarily a value investor- Value can be fo...

Are you willing to hold a stock for the next 10 years if the stock market shut down?

Is there a stock you are willing to hold for the next 10 years if the stock market shut down?Warren Buffett used this analogy many years ago. If you are not willing to own the stock for at least 10 years, you should not be buying to own it for the next 10 days or even 10 mins. This is a very useful "Thought Exercise". If you were to go through your portfolio right now, are the stocks in there companies you are willing to be a part of for the next 10 years if the stock market shut down? What about...

Lessons from Investment Mistakes

Brake! Some of you who follow my personal page will have read about a fault that recently occurred in my car, whilst on a long holiday! Well that was a bummer because we were told there was a risk the brakes would not work (disaster!) and we were not sure when it could get fixed (how now?). And how to get our caravan home across the sea?! But we can stay positive and make do with what we have. That included getting a rental car to get around, get some homework done, etc. And wait...That got me thi...

And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.’ Ruth 2:8-9 Verb #4: WATCH Pay attention to where the grains are! Sometimes, we over-spiritualise things. Isn't it...

Don't water the weeds and cut off the flowers (of your investment garden)!!

"Selling your winners and holding your losers is like cutting the flowers and watering the weeds." Peter LynchI was sharing this with some of my investment mentees recently. There is a popular concept called portfolio rebalancing where every set period of time, you will sell winners and rebalance your portfolio back to a set proportion for each stock. I can see the wisdom in that as a risk management tool. However, where I disagree is if you sell a stock just because it has gone up in price and n...

Ruth Truth 9: Working for a day's wage

"She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter." Ruth 2:7 Well, I've written quite a few "inspiration" type posts but today is a bit more sober. We all want to be financially free, to have a good life etc and there is nothing wrong with that.  The phrase that jumped out at me is "except for a short rest". Remember, Ruth is a young girl, and there she is, out in the hot sun, bending over and picking up leftover grain. Not exactly ...
